IN THE FUTURE, IT IS VERY LIKELY THAT THERE WILL BE GOVERNMENT WILDLIFE REHABILITATION LICENSING​, LIKE SCOTLAND'S NEW LICENSING (AS OF SEPTEMBER 2021).  HERE'S WHY WCB BELIEVES IT TO BE A GOOD IDEA TO HAVE SELF-REGULATION BEFOREHAND.

1…  We improve current wildlife care standards a lot sooner.  

 

2…  Some less experienced Wildlife Rehabbers will have the chance to get up to a standard that could better match official licensing requirements, ahead of time.

THE LAST BENEFIT

 

The last benefit (as is already actually happening) is that, since the Wildlife Care Badge, for example, has been developed by wildlife professionals (working together) a document has been created (from within the wildlife community) that government officials can use (and they have already requested and been given a working copy of the WCB, as a very small part of their consultations on this topic) to base their new licensing plans on, as they can see more clearly what is required to properly regulate wildlife rehabilitation. 

 

To summarise, there is a chance that self regulated polices now will be the model on which future licensing is based, as it comes from the experiences and insights of wildlife professionals themselves.
